Module 2 of 3

Module 2 — Flow and Capacity

Covers line balancing, capacity planning and production flow decisions.

What you will be able to do

Turn standard minutes into an operation bulletin, a balanced line and a capacity plan a factory can actually commit to.

The practical work

Build an operation bulletin for one style from its SMVs, calculate the takt and the theoretical manpower for a target output, then balance the line and name the bottleneck. Convert the line's available minutes and achieved efficiency into daily capacity and use it to test one order's delivery date against the critical path.

Prerequisite: Read module 1 and pass its quiz first.

Reading for this module

Read these 4 Garment Ed subjects in order, then take the quiz below.

  2. 2. Line Balancing
  3. 3. Capacity Planning
  4. 4. Production Planning and Control

Module quiz

5 questions on Module 2 — Flow and Capacity. Answer them all, then check your score before moving on. 4 correct or more is a pass. Your best score is saved on this device, and to your account when you are signed in. This is a self-check, not an accredited assessment.

  1. 1. Total garment SMV is 20 minutes, 40 operators work 480 minutes at 60% efficiency. What is the daily output?

  2. 2. What limits a line's output?

  3. 3. What does an operation bulletin list?

  4. 4. Line balancing reduces the bottleneck time by 20%. What happens to line efficiency?

  5. 5. A planner promises a date using 100% efficiency and no learning curve. What is wrong?
