Comparing like areas

Lesson 2 of 4

Objective

Compare denim with the approved wash range fairly, area by area.

Technical explanation

Assess separately, as applicable: base shade, cast (for example greener or redder), contrast between high and low points, coverage of the effect, and hand feel.

Compare the same area of the garment with the same area of the approved reference — front thigh with front thigh — in a comparable presentation.

Use the approved wash range (lightest and darkest acceptable references) where one is supplied.

Worked case

Factory scenario: darker but within range

A garment looks darker than the single reference on the table. When the full approved range is brought out, it falls within it. The inspector records shade, contrast and coverage separately and notes the range reference used.

Common mistakes

  • Combining shade, contrast and coverage into one 'wash OK'.
  • Comparing a folded garment with a flat reference.
  • Ignoring the approved range.

Your action

Write the five wash attributes you would record for each garment.
