What really happens at this stage

Sampling produces the physical garments that validate design intent, construction, fit, and production feasibility at successive stages: proto sample, fit sample, size-set, pre-production (PP) sample, and shipment sample. The proto sample is the first physical build from the initial pattern, used mainly to check silhouette and construction feasibility rather than exact fit. Fit samples follow pattern corrections and are assessed on a fit model or mannequin against the measurement specification. Size-set samples extend the check across the full size range to confirm the grading holds proportion in physical form, not only in the digital pattern. Each round generates a comment sheet that feeds back into pattern development, and the number of rounds needed depends on how well earlier stages, especially pattern and 3D review, anticipated the issues found in physical cloth.

The pre-production sample is made using bulk-approved fabric, trims, and the actual production line or a close simulation of it, and its purpose is to confirm that the garment can be built at scale exactly as approved, not just as a one-off by a skilled sample hand. The shipment sample, pulled from early bulk production, verifies that the running production matches the approved PP sample before the order ships. Sample rooms track turnaround time per round and comment closure rate, since repeated unresolved comments across rounds usually indicate a root cause in pattern or fabric that has not been properly addressed rather than a simple construction slip.

How it is done

    Build the proto sample

    Construct the first sample from the initial pattern using available fabric, focusing on silhouette and construction feasibility.

    Conduct fit sample review

    Fit the corrected pattern sample on a fit model or mannequin, measuring against the spec sheet at all points of measurement.

    Issue and close fit comments

    Log every comment with the responsible action, and confirm each is closed in the pattern before the next sample round starts.

    Produce size-set samples

    Sew the full size range from the graded pattern and check proportion and fit balance across sizes, not only the sample size.

    Make the pre-production sample

    Build the PP sample on bulk-approved fabric and trims, following the confirmed production sequence, and secure buyer sign-off before bulk cutting starts.

    Pull and verify shipment samples

    Draw samples from early bulk output and compare against the approved PP sample before authorising shipment.

Control points to check and sign off

  • Each sample stage is measured against the current approved spec sheet, not an earlier version.
  • Comment sheets are documented and tracked to closure across rounds.
  • PP sample uses bulk-approved fabric and trims, not substitute materials.
  • Buyer sign-off on the PP sample is obtained and recorded before bulk cutting begins.
  • Shipment samples are physically compared against the retained PP sample, not against the tech pack alone.

Common pitfalls and their consequences

  • Approving a PP sample made with substitute fabric or trims, leaving the bulk line to face a different material behaviour.
  • Losing track of open comments across rounds, so the same fit issue reappears in a later sample.
  • Skipping size-set sampling and assuming the graded pattern behaves correctly in physical form.
  • Starting bulk cutting before PP sign-off is formally recorded, exposing the order to late rejection.
  • Comparing shipment samples only to the tech pack instead of the physical PP sample, missing construction drift.
