What really happens at this stage

Fit approval is the checkpoint where a garment's dimensions, ease, and silhouette are confirmed against the design intent, combining virtual fit review in 3D software with physical fit sessions on a fit model, mannequin, or live model. Virtual fit sessions let designers and merchandisers rotate a digital avatar through standard poses to catch obvious proportion or drape problems early, but virtual review cannot fully substitute for physical assessment because real fabric behaviour, seam bulk, and body movement introduce fit effects that simulation still approximates rather than reproduces exactly. Physical fit sessions bring together design, merchandising, and technical teams to review the sample on a body, checking ease at key girths, garment balance, and range of motion for functional garments.

Fit comments are recorded against specific points of measurement, with each comment classified as a pattern correction, a construction correction, or a design change, since the corrective action differs by category. A grading or fit consistency check across the sample size and adjacent sizes confirms the fit intent holds through the size range, not only on the sample size body. Sign-off at this stage is formally recorded, typically by the technical or merchandising lead, and becomes the reference point pattern development uses to close out the current sampling round. Repeated fit failures on the same points of measurement usually indicate the base pattern or block needs revision rather than a one-off correction.

How it is done

    Run virtual fit check

    Review the 3D avatar in standard poses to flag obvious proportion, drape, or ease issues before committing to a physical sample.

    Set up the physical fit session

    Dress the fit model or mannequin in the sample and photograph front, back, and side views for the record.

    Measure key points of measurement

    Record actual garment measurements at each specified point and compare against the tolerance allowed in the spec sheet.

    Assess ease, balance, and movement

    Check ease at chest, waist, and hip, garment balance front-to-back, and range of motion for functional or performance garments.

    Classify and log fit comments

    Categorise each comment as pattern, construction, or design related, and assign the correction to the responsible team.

    Sign off and route to pattern update

    Record formal sign-off with photos and comment sheet, then route the file to pattern development for the next revision.

  • Fit session photographs and measurements are recorded and retained for each round.
  • Every fit comment is classified by corrective action type before being routed onward.
  • Fit consistency is checked across at least the sample size and one adjacent size.
  • Formal sign-off is documented with a named approver before the sample round is closed.
  • Recurring comments are escalated to a base pattern or block review rather than repeatedly patched.

  • Proceeding to bulk without a documented sign-off, leaving no clear reference if a dispute arises later.
