Merchandiser — what the job really is
Every role guide, study and toolkit here is free of charge — no candidate fees, no employer fees, no commission. Never pay anyone for a job in this industry.
Works in: Merchandising office, with the buyer and the floor
What you actually do
- Cost the enquiry: fabric and trim consumption, CM, freight, and the negotiation position.
- Book fabric and trims and chase them until they are in store on the required date.
- Drive the approval chain — lab dips, fabric, trims, fit and pre-production samples.
- Maintain the time and action calendar and escalate before a date slips, not after.
- Answer the buyer clearly, in writing, with numbers.
Skills employers screen for
- · Consumption and costing maths you can defend line by line
- · Time and action planning discipline
- · Clear written English with buyers
- · Enough technical knowledge to argue with a mill and a factory on equal terms
Qualification & experience
Apparel management, textile or business qualification. Merchandising is the most common office entry route for garment graduates.
