Works in: Mill, lab and factory fabric store

What you actually do

  • Read and judge test reports: shrinkage, colour fastness, pilling, strength, GSM.
  • Run inspection of incoming fabric rolls (4-point system) and release or reject lots.
  • Set shrinkage and skew allowances for pattern and cutting.
  • Investigate fabric-related claims with the mill and hold them to the standard.

Skills employers screen for

  • · Test standards (ISO / AATCC / ASTM) and what each number actually means
  • · Fabric construction, yarn count, GSM and finishing effects
  • · 4-point inspection and lot release judgement
  • · Technical negotiation with mills

Qualification & experience

Textile engineering or technology degree, or lab experience in a mill.

How to get in — the realistic route

  1. 1. Learn to read a real test report end to end — the free explainer walks through one.
  2. 2. Target mills first: the technical grounding you gain there travels well into buying offices.
  3. 3. Apply as Lab Technician / Fabric QA and grow into technologist roles.
