Module 2 of 3

Module 2 — Engineering the product

Activewear, outerwear and protective workwear, and the construction each one needs.

What you will be able to do

Choose seam and closure construction that carries the product's performance: sealed and taped seams, bonded joins, flatlock for skin contact, and protective detailing.

The practical work

For one technical style, mark on a sketch every seam and closure, and state for each one what it must resist — water, abrasion, chafe, heat or movement — and the construction chosen for it.

Prerequisite: Read module 1 and pass its quiz first.

Practical worksheet

For one technical style, mark on a sketch every seam and closure, and state for each one what it must resist — water, abrasion, chafe, heat or movement — and the construction chosen for it.

  1. Identify requirements and assumptions.
  2. Record evidence and calculations.
  3. Choose a decision and containment action.
  4. Assign an owner and verification check.

Module quiz

5 questions on Module 2 — Engineering the product. Answer them all, then check your score before moving on. 4 correct or more is a pass. Your best score is saved on this device, and to your account when you are signed in. This is a self-check, not an accredited assessment.

  1. 1. Why is seam sealing needed on a waterproof jacket even with a waterproof fabric?

  2. 2. Why is flatlock used on skin-contact seams in compression activewear?

  3. 3. A high-visibility workwear jacket is altered to add a chest pocket. What must be re-checked?

  4. 4. Why can a bonded seam replace stitching in some technical products?

  5. 5. What is the purpose of a pre-production seam performance trial?
