Capstone · Apparel Merchandising and Costing

Take one enquiry from quotation to shipment plan

A buyer sends an enquiry for 30,000 pieces of a style your factory can make, asking for a price and a delivery date within two days. You own the quotation, the confirmation and the critical path.

Who this is for: Merchandisers, costing staff, planners and account managers.

What you produce: A quotation and execution pack: the cost sheet with sources, the price with its assumptions, the critical path, and the escalation you would send when a date slips.

Nobody marks this for you. Write your own answer, compare it with the guidance under each task, then mark the capstone done when you are satisfied with it. Your writing is saved on this device, and to your account when you sign in.

  1. Task 1

Build the cost sheet and state for each line whether the figure is measured, quoted or assumed.

What a good answer contains: A good answer measures fabric consumption, quotes trims from suppliers, and shows the costed minute rate. It totals how much of the price rests on assumptions and flags the riskiest one.

  2. Task 2

Write the quotation conditions: quantity, size ratio, material prices, delivery terms and validity. Say what changes trigger a re-quote.

What a good answer contains: A good answer makes the price conditional in writing, so later changes become a variation rather than an argument.

  3. Task 3

Build the critical path from order confirmation to shipment, with the three dates that decide whether the order ships on time.

What a good answer contains: A good answer works backwards from the shipment date, identifies material approval, bulk fabric in-house and PP approval as decision gates, and shows the float between them.

  4. Task 4

Write the escalation message for the day bulk fabric is two weeks late, including options and their costs.

What a good answer contains: A good answer informs early, states the impact on the ship date in plain numbers, and offers options with consequences instead of a promise it cannot keep.
