Preparation and balance

Lesson 1 of 4

Objective

Prepare woven bottoms consistently so that balance and symmetry can be judged fairly.

Identify the style, size and approved construction before you begin.

Hang the garment first and look at overall balance. Then lay it flat on a clean table, smoothing gently without stretching or forcing it into shape.

Compare the left and right legs: length, width, crease line and how the hems sit.

Factory scenario: the 'fixed' trouser

An inspector pulls a trouser leg hard to straighten it and reports it as balanced. A second inspector lays it flat without force and sees the leg rotate. Forcing it flat had hidden the problem.

Common mistakes

  • Stretching the garment to make it lie flat.
  • Comparing a hung leg with a flat leg.
  • Not confirming size before measuring.

Your action

Practice hanging then laying flat one pair of trousers without force, and note what you see at each stage.
