Move beyond a recycling vocabulary
Circular fashion education needs more than a list of recycling terms. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation offers circular-economy teaching resources, and the Design4Circle curriculum connects textile learning with eco-design. These provide starting points for examining how design, use and recovery relate to one another.
In a garment classroom, follow one product through its intended life. Ask what could shorten its useful life, how damage might be repaired and what happens when it is no longer wanted. Keep uncertainty visible: a technically recyclable material is not proof that a collection and processing route is available locally.
Compare two versions of one garment
Choose a fictional shirt and compare two specifications. Keep its purpose constant while changing one design choice, such as a fastening or a fabric blend. Ask learners to describe the effect on construction, care, likely repair tasks and possible end-of-use handling.
The exercise should not declare a universal winner. A choice that simplifies one stage may complicate another. Require a comparison table with the evidence available, the information still needed and the people who would need to approve the change. This trains systems thinking rather than the repetition of environmental slogans.
Connect the classroom to production records
A cutting-waste exercise can start with issued fabric, cut quantities and recorded offcuts. Define the measurement boundary before comparing alternatives. Do not mix purchased fabric, issued fabric and garment weight in one calculation without explaining the differences.
Use clearly labelled practice data if real records are unavailable. Separate a measured reduction in cutting-room waste from a claim about the total environmental footprint of the garment. The latter needs a wider evidence base; a classroom worksheet alone cannot establish it.
Assess a defensible recommendation
Ask each learner to recommend one change and explain both its benefit and its limitations. The submission should identify the product, intended user, operational constraints, evidence source and a way to test the idea. Another learner can challenge the recommendation before it is revised.
Link this work to material knowledge, sourcing and costing instead of treating sustainability as a separate slogan. A self-study completion record demonstrates study, not environmental certification. Claims about a real product must follow the applicable evidence requirements and review procedures.
