What really happens at this stage
Once a garment leaves retail, its performance is judged against how it survives repeated wearing, washing and storage in real households, which differ widely from controlled laboratory conditions. Consumers apply detergents, water temperatures and drying methods that vary by country and habit, and these interact with the fabric construction, dye class and finishing chemistry chosen earlier in development. Garments that passed laboratory wash-and-wear cycles can still show pilling, seam slippage, colour change or shrinkage in the field if the test protocol did not reflect realistic domestic use. Care label instructions are the main tool for managing this gap, so their accuracy and clarity carry real consequences for perceived quality.
Durability in use also depends on how the wearer treats the garment physically, including friction from bags, abrasion from seat belts, or the amount of body movement expected in the intended use case such as workwear versus occasional eveningwear. Brands that gather structured feedback from wear trials, consumer panels or return and complaint data can identify recurring weak points such as a specific seam type or trim that fails prematurely. This feedback loop, when it actually reaches design and sourcing teams, becomes the practical link between real-world performance and future specification changes, closing a cycle that purely laboratory-based testing cannot complete on its own.

Wash sample garments using consumer-representative machine cycles and detergents from the target market, not only the single reference method used in lab compliance testing.

Place pre-production samples with a panel of real users for 4-8 weeks of normal use and collect structured feedback on comfort, fit retention and visible wear.
- 3Track in-market complaint patterns
Log customer service and warranty complaints by defect type and garment component so recurring failure points are visible, not buried in individual case notes.
- 4Feed findings back to design and sourcing
Hold a quarterly review where wear trial and complaint data are translated into concrete spec or supplier changes.
- 5Educate consumers on care
Use hangtags, packaging inserts or app content to explain why specific care instructions matter for a particular fabric, improving compliance with the label.
- 6Reassess care instructions periodically
Revisit care label wording whenever fabric, dye or finish changes, since an outdated instruction can cause avoidable damage.

- Tracking of component-level failure (seam, trim, zipper) rather than only whole-garment complaint counts.
Common pitfalls and their consequences
- Relying only on a single standardised lab wash cycle that does not represent how consumers actually launder the garment.
- Never routing in-market complaint data back to the design team, so the same failure repeats season after season.
- Writing care instructions generically across a whole collection instead of matching them to the specific fabric and finish used.
- Treating consumer misuse and genuine manufacturing defects as the same category, which distorts root-cause analysis.
- Ending product oversight at the point of sale, missing the opportunity to learn from how garments actually perform.
