Learning objectives

  • Explain the purpose of future-state process design in a garment-factory improvement project.
  • Apply the described method to a representative shop-floor situation.
  • Recognize the common mistakes and how to avoid them.

Concept

Future-state design integrates selected solutions into a coherent flow, information system, standard work, ownership, and control concept.

Define sequence, roles, handoffs, WIP, pull signals, quality at source, data capture, escalation, maintenance, training, and transition requirements.

Design for the exception path, not only the ideal path.

Garment-factory example

Redesign cut-panel release with bundle identity, shade controls, WIP limits, first-piece approval, and digital exception alerts.

Method

  1. Map current constraints.
  2. Apply selected changes.
  3. Simulate scenarios.
  4. Conduct walk-through and FMEA.
  5. Define measures.
  6. Approve phased implementation.

Common mistakes

  • Drawing only the ideal flow.
  • Omitting rework, downtime, and abnormal conditions.
