Learning objectives

  • Explain the purpose of solution screening against ctqs in a garment-factory improvement project.
  • Apply the described method to a representative shop-floor situation.
  • Recognize the common mistakes and how to avoid them.

Concept

Early screening removes ideas that cannot meet CTQs, safety, legal, quality, capacity, or sustainability constraints.

Separate non-negotiable gates from weighted preferences to prevent trading safety for speed.

Include worker safety, chemical compliance, buyer requirements, environmental impact, maintainability, and scalability.

Garment-factory example

A faster curing setting fails screening if shade fastness or restricted-substance risk becomes unacceptable, regardless of throughput gain.

Method

  1. Translate CTQs to measurable thresholds.
  2. Screen against gates using evidence.
  3. Record reason for each rejection.
  4. Improve or drop failed options.

Common mistakes

  • Weighting a legal requirement as negotiable.
  • Screening with vague words such as 'good enough'.

Knowledge check

Pick one answer per question. Explanations appear after you submit.

  1. 1. A mandatory gate failure means:

  2. 2. Screening thresholds should be:
